Sharing the Planet: Energy

Sharing the Planet: Energy.

Our third unit of inquiry is called Energy. Its central idea is "Humans use, control and transform energy to make their lives easier".
The key concepts to work are Form, Change, Responsibility.
Related Concepts: Energy transformation, energy conservation, efficiency, power

Chile's Natural Zone

Chile's Natural Zone

Chile has territories in three different countries: America, Oceania and the Antartic. That's why we can find a variety of natural landscapes and resources associated to those geographical features. Take a look at the following video to learn more.

What are Natural Resources?

What are Natural Resources?

Ever since the earth was inhabited, humans and other life forms have depended on things that exist freely in nature to survive. They are called Natural Resources and are the basis of life on earth. Take a look at the following website and learn more about them.

Where is water going?

The impact of global warming on the planet is evident: bodies of water in different parts of the world are disappearing.

These images taken by the NASA show us the drastic change in the levels of water.

Avocado Water Crisis?

Probelms related to water are also a national reality.
European countries are not willing to buy Chilean products due to their negative impact on nature.

Water Cycle

The Water Cycle

Resultado de imagen para the water cycle

Evaporation:
Heat from the Sun causes water on Earth (in oceans, lakes etc) to evaporate (turn from liquid
into gas) and rise into the sky. This water vapor collects in the sky in the form of clouds.

Condensation:
As water vapor in the clouds cools down it becomes water again, this process is called
condensation.

Precipitation:
Water falls from the sky in the form of rain, snow, hail, or sleet, this process is called
precipitation.

Collection:
Oceans and lakes collect water that has fallen. Water evaporates into the sky again and the
cycle continues.

Transpiration:
In a process similar to sweating, plants lose water which is absorbed into the atmosphere
much like evaporation. The combination of evaporation and transpiration is known as
evapotranspiration.

Sublimation:
It is possible for a solid to transform into a gas directly (without becoming a liquid). The most
common example of sublimation is dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) which sublimes at normal air temperature. Under certain conditions snow and ice can also sublime.

Water Problem Problems

Water is one of the most important elements on the planet and life without it wouldn’t be possible. However, there are several problems related to this precious and vital element as well. We invite you to do the following activity:

1) Think of a problem or situation in which water is somehow involved, eg.: droughts, floods, access to clean fresh water, water distributionin cities, transport, weather, etc.

2) When you already chose the problem, search for solutions to it, that you may find on the same webpage that you found the problem.

3) Now YOU THINK of some possible solutions for this problem. Do not copy previous ideas, just use them to get some inspiration.
